is there anybody in the world who dislikes tom brokaw? does such a person exist? i've always liked him. i know people criticize his speech pattern, but i think it's kind of soothing. for sure, his voice is. i'm watching the colbert report. stephen wants to be secretary of state. he thinks brokaw is out to compete.

tb: ...i think that public service is a noble, noble avocation and profession, but i'm at a stage in my life where i want to stay a journalist and i think that there is honor in that and i think it's a form of public service as well, so no i'm not like you, i'm not looking for a job in the new cabinet.

sc: is that just another way of saying you didn't pass the vetting process?

tb: that's true as well.

sc: they found something dark in your past?

tb: well, homicide. i don't know why that, you know, why that would have anything to do with it.

i adore him. i love how well spoken and intelligent he is. i love that dad vibe about him, like i could go to him with any question and he'd have an answer. and i love that he has a good sense of humor. i watched him on conan once and he was so witty, but with his normal kind of deadpan delivery which just made it that much better.

yes i transcribed it. what about it?

IPv6 (or, hello from 2001:470:1f04:900::2 !)

I figured it was time to learn IPv6 so I setup IPv6 at home using Hurricane Electric's free tunnel broker, one termination point of which is across the Bay in Fremont, so latency overhead is negligible, and he.net's IPv6 deployment is good (or so Lorenzo tells me).

sammy:~# ping6 ipv6.google.com
PING ipv6.google.com(2001:4860:0:2001::68) 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 2001:4860:0:2001::68: icmp_seq=1 ttl=58 time=97.7 ms
64 bytes from 2001:4860:0:2001::68: icmp_seq=2 ttl=58 time=96.9 ms
64 bytes from 2001:4860:0:2001::68: icmp_seq=3 ttl=58 time=97.2 ms
64 bytes from 2001:4860:0:2001::68: icmp_seq=4 ttl=58 time=98.0 ms

sammy:~# ping google.com
PING google.com (64.233.187.99) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from jc-in-f99.google.com (64.233.187.99): icmp_seq=1 ttl=246 time=94.5 ms
64 bytes from jc-in-f99.google.com (64.233.187.99): icmp_seq=2 ttl=246 time=97.7 ms
64 bytes from jc-in-f99.google.com (64.233.187.99): icmp_seq=3 ttl=246 time=93.7 ms
64 bytes from jc-in-f99.google.com (64.233.187.99): icmp_seq=4 ttl=246 time=92.5 ms
(Not that much worse.)

And I can now see all the dancing logos on various websites. (it's IPv6 tradition to serve animated GIFs of your company/site logo for people accessing it over IPv6.... silly, but cute.)

Still have some work to do... I need to get the rest of my machines routing through my Linux server (the one with the tunnel), including wifi. What's the typical configuration here? DHCPv6 and broadcast the route? Or does the IPv6 stateless auto-configuration for assigning the locally-scoped/link-local/etc addresses also include smarts of hosts w/ gateways advertising that?

In any case, still clueless, but at least with the tools to get slightly less clueless now.

It's weird having my own /64. (that's 2^64 addresses for my house)

The Michael Pollan for Agriculture Petition

IMHO, this man would be ideal for the position of Secretary of Agriculture. So please examine and sign the petition:
http://www.petitiononline.com/MPoll4Ag/petition.html

For a relatively short article (9 pages. Very interesting. Reading is GOOD for you!), check this out: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/12/magazine/12policy-t.html?scp=4&sq=Michael%20Pollan&st=cse. In the article Michael Pollan explains what's wrong with our agriculture system today, what should be done about it and why.

Don't forget to pass this along!

Captain Kirk has entitled me with the duty of coming up with something creative to do for our store's holiday celebration. Any suggestions? This will be my sixth holiday season with the company, if we do something, this will only be the third time we've celebrated.

I know that we have an eclectic group of individuals - out of our fifteen employees, we have a Jehova's Witness, a Jewish individual, and a wiccan. I would like the excuse to get us all together - as we all get along splendidly and it would be an excellent excuse for us all to hang out outside of work. The only thing I can come up with is a Secret Santa - which has zero creativity and would immediately alienate a few people who don't celebrate THAT specific holiday.

So, um... my creative bunch - any ideas?

Ed +amp; Philip will join the new Seven Worlds Collide project

Ed and Philip will rejoin Neil Finn in a follow up to the acclaimed Seven Worlds Collide project at the end of the year. Together with members of the original line up and other artists, the ‘supergroup’ will record an album of entirely new material in support of international development organisation Oxfam.

The original Seven Worlds Collide line up was Neil Finn, Ed O’Brien, Phil Selway, guitar supremo Johnny Marr, Soul Coughing bassist Sebastian Steinberg, songwriter and violinist Lisa Germano, and Liam Finn. Other artists joining the project include Jeff Tweedy, John Stirrat, Glenn Kotche and Pat Sansone from Wilco, and New Zealand songwriters Bic Runga and Don McGlashan. Behind the mixing desk will be master recording engineer Jim Scott. More names will be added to the lineup in the coming weeks.

The album will be recorded over the next few months in Auckland and is due for release in 2009. Like its predecessor, the project will also see a series of concerts featuring many of the artists included in the line up. The shows will take place in Auckland early in the New Year. Details will be announced soon.

Neil Finn said “Seven years ago I invited a few friends and fellow musicians to do a special series of concerts in New Zealand under the banner Seven Worlds Collide. The concerts were an amazing experience for all of us and we are delighted to have found an opportunity to gather again, this time to expand the concept and the line up too. What will make these sessions particularly meaningful is that all the proceeds of this recording will go to support the continuing great work of Oxfam International.”

"I am a terrorist..." (but...)

"An NHS doctor who crashed into Glasgow Airport in a car laden with petrol and gas canisters admitted he was a terrorist. Iraqi Bilal Abdulla, 29, alleged to have crashed into the airport in a Jeep laden with petrol and gas canisters, said he told Scottish police just minutes after arrest he was a terrorist. But a jury at Woolwich Crown Court heard the junior doctor say he was not part of a conspiracy to kill or injure anyone."

It just makes me sick listening to a whole tissue of lies spun by failed would-be suicide bombers, trying to lie their way out of our justice system, and maybe escape jail to have another go. "Milord, I only threw the petrol bomb as far away from myself as I could so as not to get myself burnt," is what I understand forms part of his "defense". Strangely, when arrested after failed bomb plots, they all "never intended to kill or maim anyone innocent". They really must take us all for fools. Maybe we are, for granting asylum to this nutcase in the first place.

That terrorist has admitted to being a terrorist. So end of case. At least a life sentence, with no parole, methinks.

Bilal Abdullah claims in court he just wanted to give the UK "a taste of fear", like that which he feels Iraqis experience. Fact is, we got rid of Saddam, we freed Iraqis from tyranny, and we gave them the democracy they wanted. And we're still trying to help them with their internal security. (Note: "The Iraqi cabinet has (overwhelmingly) approved a security pact with the United States that will govern the presence of American troops in the country until their planned withdrawal in three years time." - They know what's good for them even if "the one" doesn't! And while I'm on the subject of terrorists, it's all very well closing down Guantanamo Bay. So, the question is: what exactly are you going to do with all those potential terrorists? Let them loose in the USA? They're not coming to the UK thanks. All very well restoring "moral stature" but risk making America less safe (as suggested by Sky News)? Should be "fun" to see how the next administration grapple with this issue. Do what you have to do - but no more BS about this being an issue of "moral stature". It would have certainly been "immoral" to have allowed Saddam to continue, wouldn't it?)

[Already preaching even when it's supposedly 'one president at a time'. I suppose it's not 'one preacher at a time'. BOZO!]

Misjudgement

Know what sucks?

Driving your motorcycle home in drizzling rain with no goggles or face shield (I can't see with it down when it's raining), when it's 50 degrees out, with damp wool socks on your hands for gloves.

At least my German parka came today. It's huge, but warm.

'one president at a time'

Defeating Al Qaeda "once and for all" and tackling the economic crisis will be his first priorities when he comes into office (he says). He will "regain America's moral stature". As I have ranted, he failed to show leadership re: the recent G20 meeting. Now, I do wonder - if bin Laden drops in to his office, would he say, 'one president at a time' - 'I can't take action against you until January 20th'? Why are we getting weekly addresses from an office that supposedly doesn't officially exist ('president-elect') when it's 'one president at a time'? If it's really 'one president at a time', then get out of my sight until January 20th!

This is going to be a presidency of glib, meaningless, stupid phrases!
